NaNoWriMo 2010 - growing Up Interlude
Year One
Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt had memorized the day of the twin’s birthday. It was simple for her, all she had to do was remember the day that a woman had died in childbirth, and the frightening- almost alien- children had actually been born. She shook her head. This year was going to be nothing like the last year, nothing at all. She knew it was rather silly to have a birthday for one year olds, but there was something comforting in the ritualistic atmosphere of a party.
Besides, it was traditional.
Year Two
The twins began walking in the days leading up to their second birthday. It was not that they were stupid, it was just… Well, why bother when you could just crawl, or get one of the four lovely adults to carry you? Mizu Mama would just pick them up with no questions asked, as would Thoma Daddy. Aunty Yuki was a little harder, but even she could not hesitate when they looked at her with their puppy dog eyes.
The only one, in fact, who was immune was Anti Yuki’s new boyfriend, Umi. His real name was Sylvester, but he liked the name Umi too, and so that was the nickname bestowed upon him.
“Learn how to walk.” He would say when he saw them crawl over to them. “Then you can conquer the world. Keep crawling, and you will never be worth more then the dirt on the street.”
He was right.
Year Three
“I know you can talk” Uncle Umi was saying. “I have heard you. Trust me, it is a lot easier to get people’s attention when you talk.”
The twins looked at each other, then at Uncle Umi. “What wou’ you like us to say?” Jaéda asked after a short mental conference with her brother.
“Well, your parents would love to hear you call them Mum and Da now and again. They were afraid that you two were mute.”
“Why wou’ they be afraid of tha?” Asked Daéja, his tiny face looking far too old.
“Because most of the information we have all heard says that you should start teaching children who are mute hand signs by their third birthday- if not younger.”
“Oh. Coul’ we still learn those?” Asked Jaéda, fascinated.
“Yep. Now, go ask them that- in words. See how excited they get.”
“Yes Uncle Umi.” Said Daéja, and then they both ran to find their parents.
Year Four
“Can you believe that they are four already?” Asked Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt of her husband.
“No, not really. Time flies, does it not?”
“Time flies.”
“Have you considered putting them in primary school?”
“I thought about it, and I talked to one of the teachers, but….”
“It is how they look, right?”
“Right. I mean, black hair is not that unusual, but when paired with white eyes… And then Jaéda has white hair and black eyes, and they are both so pale-! The teacher refused them point blank.”
“Well then, how about we homeschool them? We could open a dojo, teach some other ninja or pirate kids...”
“You have been thinking about that for a while now, have you not?”
“I have.”
“Sounds fascinating. Let us try it.”
And they sealed the deal with a kiss.
Year Five
“So, how do you like your studies?” Thomas Iruka asked his children, both coming back from the first lesson of the new year. Jaéda and Daéja had been at the dojo learning things with many ninjas and pirates as the teacher. The last teacher had been Uncle Umi, and he had (surprisingly enough) instead by teaching a mythology and or religion class. He had taught them about the supposed creation of the world, and about the pantheon that the people of the central hills believed in. He made specific mention of Poésha vas Martinierre gir Lona, goddess of the sea and Gergory Melissa Melissa Sulin Xenof vis Martinierre gar Lona, the incarnate of Chaos.
Daéja and Jaéda looked at each other in that special way only twins can. The explanation of Gergory Melissa Melissa Sulin Xenof vis Martinierre gar Lona had been interesting.
“It was… Interesting.” Jaéda said, and Daéja nodded his head in agreement.
Year Six
“At this point it has been determined that you guys are old enough to be learning the basics of ninja katas. Basically you will be learning about the types of stretching, and we will start building up your endurance. We are going to start by taking a check of how much endurance you have. This is NOT a competition. If you have low endurance capabilities, well, we can train you to have better endurance. If you have high endurance, do NOT assume that you are always and forever better. You can always be outrun. Sucks to be you!”
Jaéda and Daéja took their places, and started the activities.
If anyone noticed that they were faster then everyone else, and could run faster, no one pointed it out. After all, they were only six. A lot of things can change from when you are six.
Year Seven
“Do ya guys ever realize that you talk a lot nicer then the other people around here?” Asked one of the children in Daéja and Jaéda’s class one day.
“What on earth do you mean by that?” Asked Daéja as he did sit ups in their classroom before class started.
“Jus’ like that- you talk like yer older. All the time. It is not tha’ you mean to be rude… Ya just talk more fancy.” Said a different student as Daéja kept doing sit ups. Jaéda wandered over from where she had been doing pull ups, and raised one eyebrow at the two students.
“Look right there- you guys always act like you are older then you are. What is with that?” Asked the first student. The two siblings just looked at each other, Daéja stopping with his sit ups.
“I dunno.” He finally admitted.
“THERE! That is the FIRST time you have talked like a normal kid!”
Year Eight
“Who do you guys want to invite to your birthday party tthis year?” Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt asked of her children.
“Can it just be you, Daddy Thoma, Uncle Umi and Aunty Yuki…?” Daéja started, then:
“…And can we go to the beach?” Added Jaéda hopefully. They had both heard about the mythical ‘beach’, but despite the fact that they had been adopted by a Pirate Ninja, the beach was something that they had never really experienced.
Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt remembered the last time she had taken the twins to the beach, and the way the oceans had seemed to come straight at the children. “I do not think that that is a good idea.” She finally said, trying to ignore the disappointed looks on her children’s faces.
Year Nine
“I cannot BELIEVE you guys!” Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt yelled at her children. Both of them were soaked, but despite that, it was easy to see where tears had fallen down their faces and they were both shivering under the blanket Uncle Umi had provided them with. “I told you NOT to go to the beach, and did you LISTEN? NO! You two are SO lucky that Uncle Umi was there, or you two could have DIED!” Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt then stalked away, trying to hide the tears running down her face, and the fear that she had felt when her children had not been alilve.
“We are really sorry.” Murmered Jaéda to her Uncle Umi.
“Does she hate us?” Asked Daéja, trying to not cry. He was a nine year old boy! He did NOT cry!
“No. She was just scared. She really cares for you two, and thought you were dead.” Uncle Umi responded, holding the two children tightly.
“If we apologize, will she forgive us?”
“Of course. Make sure you give her a big hug.”
Year Ten
“This year you get to start learning about using weapons. For those of you so inclined, now would be a good time to send a prayer to Shani vas Martinierre gir Lona ,the goddess of many sharp pointy objects, (preferably shiny). Later, if you are so inclined, I would suggest giving her an offering as well. She likes chocolate. For the first hour we are going to be learning about swords using these wooden practice swords. After that, we are going to switch to throwing different kinds of weaponry, starting with knives and then going to shuriken and kunai. That will be the switch from Pirate skills to ninja skills whereupon we will be teaching you more of the ninja areas of curriculum, including the short sword, and a basic use of chakra. Any questions or concerns?” No one raised there hand, and the teacher’s smile became feral. “Well then, let us begin.”
Year Eleven
“It was decided that you are now not too young to learn about some of the more complex areas of Ninja and Piraet politics. Everyone pull out their note booklets and pens. First thing you need to remember is that Ninjas and Pirates have traditional been enemies. However, recent events have forced the Ninjas and Pirates in this area to start coming together. This is why you have been having class with the children of both Ninjas and Pirates. Now we have a couple of guest lecturers who have agreed to come in to talk to you, Ninja Pirate Yukiko O’Bonny Suzumiya and Pirate Ninja Thomas Iruka McGonnagal. Make sure you listen, and take notes. I know that they’re your family Miss Jaéda and Mister Daéja, but that includes you.”
Year Twelve
“This year you are going to be learning about somthing different: the facts of life. How many of you have already been taught this some at home?” About two thirds of the hands rose. Uncle Umi kept talking, “you can put your hands down now. Usually you would need to bring in parent or guardian permission forms, however I have already gone to each of your parents and received written permission from all of them: None of you have been excused, so I get to teach ALL of you.” His smile became feral- it was just one of his traits. Several students had indded tried to find out if he could ever smile un-feraly, and the answer was no. “Now I get to teach you about the wonders of the human body.” He pulled a chart of a human body that he had mande out from his bag and attached it to the wall. “This” he continued “is the neck. Now, I know a lot of you don’t want ot think about killing, but some of you might continue on in the family business of being Ninjas or Pirates, and occasionally killing is a necessity… We do NOT advocate that you become killers, but we DO want you to prepared, should you ever be forced, or choose to be in that situation.”
Year Thirteen
“Hey Daé, you busy later today?” Asked one of the girls in Daéja and Jaéda’s Ninja specific classes.
“No Lacy, why?”Daéja said as he did his cool down exersizes. He was not wearing a shirt, and his pale (no matter how long he or Jaéda stayed in the sun, their skins remained ultimately pale- not even a sunburn!) abs covered in sweat from hard he had been working. No girls, he did not sparkle. That is some definitely stupid shit right there. I HATE that book! I HATE IT!
“Well…” Lacy said, twisting a think lank of hair around her finger. “I was wondering if you wanted to go to the theatre tonight.”
“Um… Sure. Why?”
“Oh, um, I mean, er… I just though you would like it! That is it! So, tomorrow, right? Going home now!” And she left, leaving a confused Daéja and smirking Jaéda behind.
Year Fourteen
“Jaé, have you seen Gary? I mean, is he not to most hot guy ever?”
“Um… No, I do not think so.” Jaéda said, confused as to why this girl was talking to her. She did not have many friends in class- at least, not many people that she talked to, so to have this girl talking to her was odd. Not necessarily unpleasant, but just odd.
“Huh. Well, ya know your brother is pretty hot too!”
“What? My brain does not want to go there!” And she made a face of utter disgust.
“See! I told you I could get her to make an expression other then boredom!” The girl said, but she said it with a grin at Jaéda that could never be seen as anything other then friendly, and Jaéda (to her surprise) found herself returning the grin.
Year Fifteen
Daéja was not sure what he was expecting when Lacy pulled him into the shadows after class. Oh sure, he had known that she had had a crush on her when they were both younger, but this- well, this was unexpected (but not necessarily a bad thing).
She pressed her lips to his hungrily, and he responded in kind. There kiss was sloppy, and ridiculous, but it was still after all their first kiss.
He did not notice Jaéda’s confused look as she saw him and Lacy making out in the corner, nor her look of hurt moments later.
Year Sixteen
“So how are things between you and Lacy?” Jaéda asked as she sparred her brother. They were equally matched, usually, but today he was distracted.
“Well, we broke up, but you already knew that, did you not?” He answered, tyring to not be distracted. It really did not work though.
“I know.” And she flipped her brother over in a modified Judo throw. As he lay on the ground, she felt bad for all the things she had thought the last year about Lacy. “Here, no tricks- from either of us- let me help you up, okay?” As he stood up she could tell that he really was hurt about the whole thing. He and she had once found the ability to tell each others emotions to be akin to breathing, but lately it had been more strained unless they were physically touching.
And her brother, her Daéja, was hurting- badly. She was glad she had stayed out of the whole “dating” thing, it was not worth it. “How about you and I go to get ice cream after we have cleaned ourselves up.” She said as a peace offering. She knew that she had not been the best with her brother since he had started dating Lacy, and she hoped they could get over it.
He smiled, it was shaky, but it was still a smile. “I think I would like that.” He admitted, it seens like forever since we just… Hung out.”
“I am sorry about that.”
“No worries. I was not that helpful either. Let us just forget about it for now, okay? The past can just be that- in the past.”
“That would be lovely.”
And so it was.
Year Seventeen
The twins sixteenth year was mostly uneventful. Yes, Daéja had broken up with his girlfriend but other then that… You see, it was during their seventeenth year and upon their seventeenth birthday that cool stuff actually began happening to them.
Their seventeenth year was a blur of lessons and activity as Daéja and Jaéda began to step up with their private tutoring. They had started it when they were twelve, and while their parents were quite happy about the way they were learning, there were little things- family tricks, and ways of doing things that it was decided they were old enough to learn how to do, and it had ket going from there. They had still wished they could go to the ocean, but after ninth birthday and they utter disaster that it was, they had withheld from doing so.
They two children still dressed in black and white, though that was just because colors still had a tendency to make them look ill. Daéja had taken to wearing a white button shirt with a black vest and black pants. He thought it made him look rather spiffy, and Jaéda would humor him (it was not a total lie- he did look ‘spiffy’ in it!). Jaéda had taken to wearing a white shirt to match her brothers, though she wore a black dress over that, and white boots that had been Ninja’d to stay clean. The boots were very comfortable as well as practical she had found one day, and from that day on she had been hooked.
Daéja’s black hair was the kind of hair that just randomly flew around, and managed to make him look dashingly rouge-esque, (he could never get his hair to do what he wanted it to exactly) and his white eyes shone with excitement everytime he thought something new was going to happen (or he was happy, or feeling silly, or angry, or or or…) Well, he had inherited the eye flashing skill from Mizuko Miiko Yuki Ai Uzu Nekiko Fuu Umi Umiko Uchiha Hatake Sakura Scmidt and Thomas Iruka- even though he was adopted. Funny how things work, is it not?
Jaeda had mid back white hair that curcled into ringlets when she wanted it too, or soft curls when she wanted it to, or into an afro (should she have wanted it to), point being that it would never straighten. She had most definitely tried, but as long as she tried to straighten it, it would get all messed up. But, she found, if she focused on it being curly it would act as the smoothest (and most untangled) silk. She had recently taken to alternate between wearing it in twin buns that were messy and shedding curls everywhere, and ringletted pigtails which should have made her look ridiculous and too young ,but seemed to fit on her. Her onyx (yeah, I could have just said balck, but why should I when I can say ‘onyx’ instead?) eyes had adopted a silver blaze in them, and she too had received the gift (though adopted) of eye flashing skills. She could also scare them, though, for her eyes (when not miscellaneously flashing) wre dark, and seemed like empty voides.
Both siblings had lucked out in the height department, Daéja coming in at six foot six, and Jaéda at six foot. Both were ambidextrous, and had a talent for book learning at an extremely fast rate. You could hand them a book, and they would read it quickly two or three times before having the whole thing memorized. Physical learning was something that they were not quite as fast at, though they were still a step or two ahead of their peers. Both could be quite nice though, and Daéja was quite hot, so any so called transgressions were either talked over as they were soon to be adults (Ninjas and Pirates have a habit of maturing faster then the ‘normal’ human being- probably due to the fact that they grow up believing that they were going to die young anyway), or somehow or anythoer dealt with (quite a few honor fights were fought by both Daéja and Jaéda.
On their seventeenth birthday, they actually managed to have a party at the dojo. A lot of people came, mostly classmates, and they brought presents that both a Pirate or Ninja could be proud of. They even received a really cool chess set, with magical chess pieces- they wre clear until you were given a color, and then they shifted to fit with those colors. It was rather inspiring. The weirdest present, though, came that night at midnight.
