NaNoWriMo 2010 - Part 7
“Those are large words for someone so young.” The goddess said as Jaéda and Daéja looked at each other skeptically. Uncle Umi was not young- he was old! “I see you two are not convinced, however remember one thing- I have been alive since the world was first born, being the second child born of the Great Mother herself. I am as old as the oldest ocean, older even for I was the first child born of Water, while my brother was only born when the seas and fresh waters separated. The oceans have existed for millions of years small children, and I have existed longer then that. You are all babies to me, young and foolishly inexperienced compared to my experience. Uncle Umi is even younger then that, for he is one of my brood, and I know exactly how old he is as though he were a part of me whilst you two are slightly foreign. Why do you question me thusly? Because I am the oldest before my one older brother? Because I look young? I see by your faces that you have no more questions on that matter. Very well, next objection?”
‘She did say just say that she is very old, and knows a lot of things, so…’ Jaéda sent her brother, almost afraid to finish her thought.
‘So, we could ask her- find out about our “real” father, is that what you are thinking Jae?’
“Yes.” Jae said, not really caring if she was speaking out loud and not to her brother. She tilted her body away from his, and looked straight at the goddess, then, dropping respectfully down to one knee, she entreated “Great Lady Poésha vas Martinierre gir Lona, could you please tell us about our parentage should you know it? For we have heard the story about our mother, and we know all the stories of our adopted family, but a story- an explanation about our father is something we have never heard, and would very much like to, please.”
One of the goddess’s perfect eyebrows raised, just a little, and she pursed her lips. “You wish to know about yoru father? Why? Has Uncle Umi not told you about him?”
“It was never his place to say anything unless we asked” Daéja said, shooting a questioning glance to Uncle Umi, then he continued “or, at least, we never showed any interest or asked, so I at least- I do not speak for Jae as well- understand why he would be hesitant to speak to us about this subject as we never brought it up, nor did we show any interest in the matter.”
“You do indeed speak for me dear brother,” Jaéda said, and then she added “And if this ends with Uncle Umi saying “no Jaéda and Daéja- I AM your father, search your feelings- you know it to be true”, well, I am going to kill someone.”
The goddess laughted a short laugh that sounded like the barking of the seals on the rocks in the land of Oizeran.”You two children so so incredibly precocious that it is not even funny. Why on EarthI would you think that your “Uncle Umi” as you call him is your father? It is preposterous!”
“My lady,” sqaid Kassy, and the goddess knew she was to speak the truth for that was what the lady Kassy did “I believe that it was meant as what is generally know as a “joke”, and not meant to be taken seriously.”
“Well, why did they not say so? It is ridiculous that you would even think that! My Sylvester- the real name of Uncle Umi would not be your mother. Or your father, either, why did I ever say mother? The Mother must be displeased… Very well, you wish for the truth behind your father, and I will give it to you. Your father, is indeed divine- however, he is not someone the rest of the gods enjoy the presense of. You see, yoru father was Gergory Melissa Melissa Sulin Xenof vis Martinierre gar Lona, the god of chaos. And he was not a friendly and kind god of chaos either, nor was he the kind of trickster god found in traditional fairy tales, who is kind and helpful. This was the kind of trickster god who appears in dreams to be malicious, or plays mean tricks to harm their fellow people. It was to him people prayed to if they wanted help with a trick, but he always managed to turn the trick to something evil, and hurt those involved. His favorite tricks involved lovers believing that their loved ones were untrue, and destroying relationships. One day he decided to destroy a relationahip belonging to gods themselves- hw wished to try and convince the world that The Goddess of Death, Nesia Arabella vas Martinierre gir Lona- wife of the Lord and god of death was cheating on her husband, Kerishan vis Martinierre gar Lona with the king of the gods, Herman vis Martinierre gar Lona. Instaid he was found out, and punished- but before his punishment could be finished, he split himself into two and sent his soul parts to earth, trapping us in our lands away from the mortal realms with his dying breath. You are thie children born of his union with a mortal woman- or rather, the unwilling union between his souls and a sleeping woman, a type of liason not encouraged by anyone, even the Great Mother. Do you understand? You are the children of an evil union, and you are most likely evil as well.”
“That is bullshit, and you are wrong” said Kassy to everyon’s shock. But, she was a truthsayer, blessed by the Great Mother herself, so everyone knew that she coukld not be speaking anything but the truth.
“Is it indeed?” Asked the goddess, looking over at her nymph with curiousity.
“Yes, my lady, it is. For if they were truly evil, you would not be able to shame them with the knowledge of their father. They are ashamed, though, and they seem to be sorry.” Kassy reached over, and gripped the two twins’s hands, “are you sorry?”
Compelled to only who the truth, both twins nodded, and Jaéda even mumbled “yes” while looking down on the ground.
“Very well. I do not like you two, and I will not ever I think, but Kassy is blessed by the Great Mother herself, so if she believes you two to be innocent, I will be forced to abide by her judgement though I do not like it. You two have the tattoos on your hands- my I see them?”
Jaéda and Daéja took their hands away from Kassy, and held them up for the goddess to see.
“I see”, she dsaid, “very well. Your powers have been sealed with the hopes that you two would not use them ot become evil- thank your Uncle Umi for that, I suppose, or you might have accidently destroyed your family and town when you got your whole rush of powers percisly at midnight when you turned sixteen. I will unseal them now on one condition- you two swear- as only non mortals can swear, under pain of torture and losing control of your body until you fufill your oath to do your best to get me and the rest of the gods and goddess’s away from this trapped life we lead, but instead help us to break free from our boundaries, and allow us to travel the mortal lands. Do you two understand?”
“How do we do it?” Asked Jaéda, looking not at the goddess, but instead at the fish swimming around on her hand.
“Gergory- the filth- used blood magic to trap us at a nexus point, at the mountain of the gods. If you manage to get there, all you need to do is spill some blood upon the ground where he spilled his, and will your power to unlock our gates.”
“Will the amount of blood needed be deadly to us? Will we have to die to save you all?” Asked Daéja for he did not particularly like the idea of dying now that they had found out the Truth.
“No, because you will not be able to die of blood loss. I can give you that gift, at least, take it with my blessing if you swear.”
“We swear” Jaéda said, and then she looked over at her brother. At his nod she added “we swear to try our absolute best to get you unlocked from the immortal realm as long as you gods do not meddle in our affairs unless we ask for it- or genuinely need it, rather than your own sick amusement, and you do not expect us to leave right away, for we need to settle things at home before we can start to travel. AND we will not be treated like puppets. Should you indeed want us to do as you will and save you, you will have to let us go at our own pace- but at the same time, we will do our best to make sure that our pace is not so slow as to take forever. After all, we are half human, correct?”
“In a sense, but also in a sense- no. I accept that oath and I swear that I will do everything in my power to make sure that you two survive the unlocking, even if that means giving you some of my divinity. You will also not be abelw to die until you truly want to with every strength of being, and even then, I will make sure you have other options before death.”
“We thank you Lady Poésha vas Martinierre gir Lona. I believe you said something about our power unlocking?” Daéja said, also looking down at the swimming fish on his hand.
“When you are out of my realm, and in the mortal realm it shall be done. Now, Slvester- Uncle Umi- I will be sending you three and your boat home now, and I will hopefully see you again in better times.” With that a whirlpool started to spin under the three of them, and they fell with a loud thump until- until they wre standing on the deck of a boat in a sea under the full moon.
Once in the mortal realms, Daéja nd Jaéda fell to their knees for they were feeling as though a great pressure was upon them. Theyre was a wind whistling through their ears, and they barely heard Uncle Umi’s shout as he yelled-
“ACCEPT IT! JUST ACCEPT IT AND IT WILL ALL BE OVER!”
With that in mind, Daéja nd Jaéda stopped tensing against the pressure and trying to stand up, but instead allowed themselves to fall limply against the boat’s deck and take the pressure. As soon as they had done so, the pressure was pulled into them, and soon they were no longer under the intense pressure as before. Instead, the power that was pressing down on them was inside of them, a well of white and black swirled in each of them, a well that stretched back as far as life had began, and would stretch on forever as long as there was some sort of chaos in the world. It was strange, and disorienting, and both teenagers felt like something had shifted in them. The felt the power shifting within them, and they had knowledge of how to work with it it was that simple, but scary at the same time.
“Is… This… Why… You… Blocked… Our… Power…?” Asked an exhausted Daéja.
“Yes, I am sorry for it too, I was afraid for you two, afraid that something would happen to you if you were not old enough for your power and yet had it. Think of how often in the past you have been upset, or joyful, or sad- and how things might have been different if you two had a means of destroying each other or anyone with your powers and you did not know why.”
“Why did you wait until we turned seventeen?” Asked Jaéda, rubbing one arm. She felt simultaniusly light as a balloon and heavier- like she was connected to the world. It was weird.
“Because Daéja had just broken up with Lacy, and I was afraid that it would be possible for either of you to think of using your powers against her… Rashly. And it did have to be on a birthday, I do not know why, but that is the way things work.”
“Is that how you got everyone to be silent? Because they were magicked?” Daéja asked, accepting his Uncle Umi’s explanation.
“And, are we allowed to use our powers for other things?” Jaéda asked, eye glinting with an emotion that she had been feeling for the better part of yearsi
“Yes, that would be why no one else woke up” Uncle Umi acknowledged, “I have power when I use sea water, so a little bit put into the evening drink between all of us adults. It did not send them to sleep or anything, it merely kept them form hearing us when we were moving around. The sleeping was them naturally falling asleep, so you do not have to worry. I will tell them all that happened when we get home. For tonight, you should sleep. You may have dreams that would be good for you two to have, dreams that will help you to understand how your powers work down to the minutia, or just dreams that would help you sleep a peaceful sleep- you two need it.”
“Our thanks Uncle Umi” said Daéja, and then Jaéda and he threw their arms around him. While hugging, Daéja whispered something he had been a little afraid of. “Now that we know that we have our powers… You do not need to take them away again, do you? I mean, I feel like I am really truly complete. I understand why you acted as you did, especially remembering how we have been since we were young and some of the escapades we got into, but will you ever…?”
“I swear that I will never hide your powers from you again. Now, go to sleep. I’ll get you home.”
And so they did. Once they were docked, Uncle Umi took some of the sea water, and used it to carry them home now that he knew it would not try to kill his charges. Once home, he put them in bed- dry and clean, but still dressed, and went to wake up his wife and family in law to explain everything that had happened. They took it surprisingly well, though Uncle Umi knew that that was only because it was two in the morning, and even Ninjas and Pirates and Mixes cannot be truly reasonable at two in the morning without coffee. The next morning would be interesting, so Uncle Umi went and slept on the couch.
‘She did say just say that she is very old, and knows a lot of things, so…’ Jaéda sent her brother, almost afraid to finish her thought.
‘So, we could ask her- find out about our “real” father, is that what you are thinking Jae?’
