Wherein Mai is placed in a House she did not expect.
---------------------------------------
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
Mai listened to the sorting hat with disinterest. She knew what the houses were for, she didn't need to be told by a singing hat of all the things. Besides, she knew what house she'd be in, Slytherin. Same as Azula. Same as Azula in everything. She wondered vaguely if Ty Lee was going to get into Slytherin, but she doubted it, but Ty Lee could get away with that sort of thing. Besides, if Azula was upset, they could just tell her it was so that she'd have information from the inside of other houses.
Well, except for Ravenclaw and Gryffendor, of course. Ty Lee would probably be a Hufflepuff, but Mai would have to be a Slytherin, which would leave no Ravenclaw, and if either of them dared to be in Gryffendor...
The smile that had been on Azula's face when she had seen her brother's scars haunted Mai's nightmares.
Zuko himself sat at the Gryffendor table, trying to be alone, but with some darker-skinned boy jabbering on and trying to force him into the conversation. Watching the way Zuko's face got to be more and more incredulous as the boy kept talking and gesturing was actually not boring, but Mai's poker face let no emotions through.
"Ty Lee, Hufflepuff!" the hat said, to no one's surprise. Not even Azula was taken aback, as she gave a quick thin smile to Ty Lee.
Eventually her turn came up, and the hat started to shuffle through her memories.
"I don't think you'd fit in well in Gryffendor" the hat said, shuffling through her mind, "you have bravery, but not daring, not in the same way as the Gryffendors. Ravenclaw, wouldn't work either, you're smart, but you don't value it like they do. Hufflepuff or Slytherin, what's it to be?"
"There's actually a question about this?" Mai asked the hat, eyebrows raising. She hadn't thought that her two choices would be Hufflepuff or Slytherin, she thought it would have been obvious. In a way, though, it was fitting- Azula or Ty Lee?
"You're cunning, but I'm not seeing much ambition in you" the hat said, "you're loyal, though, and patient, in a way. Decisions decisions, which is it to be?"
Mai thought about seven years living with Azula, verses seven years living with Ty Lee. Ty Lee could be annoying, but Azula could be frightening. She could hear the whispers in the great hall as the others wondered what was taking her so long.
"Just put me in Hufflepuff" Mai found herself saying, "someone needs to keep on eye on Ty Lee."
"Well, you certainly are loyal to your friend, aren't you?" the hat said, then it thundered "Hufflepuff!" to everyone's confusion. Taking the hat off of her head, Mai saw Azula thrown off for barely half a minute, before she gave Mai another thin-lipped smile, and at the Hufflepuff table, Ty Lee was applauding so wildly, her whole body was shaking.
"You're with me!" Ty Lee said, grabbing Mai's arm, and dragging Mai to a seat next to her. "We're going to have so much fun!"
"I'm not wearing yellow." Mai said.

(Also, I've never actually written for HP, or for AtLA, sorry for the mistakes).
(In my headcanon, the Fire Nation royals are very much like the ~House of Black~, you get into Slytherin OR ELSE. Zuko was already burned by the time he was sorted, but he still wanted to be in Slytherin, to try and make his dad proud, only the Sorting Hat put him in either Gryffendor ("enemies" of Slytherin, pisses his dad off even more), or Hufflepuff for his loyalty to his dad. I'm voting Gryffendor, just because in-series there's a dichotomy between Slytherin and Gryffendor, especially after the last rise of Voldey, and even if eventually the enmity between Slytherin and Gryffendor went away eventually, I'm basing this off of the first book, when there is still a very large gap between the two, and the best way to flip off [metaphorically] ones Slytherin family was to join Gryffendor, thank you Sirius Black. Why is it that Mai/Azula/Ty Lee were sorted a different year than Zuko? Because of reasons! Well, because Mai and Ty Lee had to sort with Azula. Azula wanted it that way.)

Does this take place in the first book? Also, did Zuko get the scars on his face because he was sorted into Gryffendor instead of Slytherin?
At first I wasn't sure how Mai could fit into Hufflepuff along with Ty Lee, but you've definitely convinced me here.
I wonder where Aang and the others would be sorted into...I think Aang would be either Hufflepuff or Gryfendor, though I'm not sure about the others.
Anyway, this was a cool AU.

Kind of? It's not really a "in the first book" bit, more of a "trolololol Aang=Harry Potter, and the rest will fall as it may", but yeah, it's the first book. |D
TBH, I can't decide if Zuko got the scar because of Gryffendor, or it he got the scar pre-sorting, and hoped to get into Slytherin to get back into his Daddy's good graces, only to end up in Gryffendor.
Yay! I'm glad. ♥
The way I see it, by this point, Aang/Sokka/Katara have become good friends, maybe on the train somehow? with Sokka in Gryffendor (the hat wanted him in Ravenclaw, but Sokka wanted to be in the house his Da was in, because hello! Zuko/Sokka parallels!), the hat wanted Katara in Hufflepuff, but she had heard ~stories~ about Gryffendor, and she argued so much and gave so much ~family~ speeches (I love her speeches, ngl) about hope! and stuff that the hat was like "fine, go with your brother, see if I care!" along with "well, she'd be a good Gryffendor too, I suppose", and then Aang came along, and the hat was like "Hufflepuff!" and Aang was like "Katara!" and the hat was like "HUFFLEPUFF!" and Aang was like "OMG KATARA! ♥" and the hat was like "FML. FINE. GRYFFENDOR."
And after the sorting had a long cry and drank some magical brandy. Or something.
Thank you!

Oh, that poor Sorting Hat; it never stood a chance against a Katara speech. Or Aaang and Sokka being Aaang and Sokka.
Cool Swan Princess icons btw. I have to rewatch that movie again soon.

And then, of course, Aang and the others meet this girl named Toph while at the train station, and they talk for all of five minutes, maybe? Oh, and Aang beats Toph at Wizard's chess which is so not fair because they used his set which was made of wood rather than her metal set (I'm going with "bending is a type of magic, similar to metamorphagi, and not everyone has it, but there are classes in it at Hogwarts, just in case), and the hat takes that as EVIDENCE that Toph has to be a Gryffendor, even though she's like "RAWR HE BEAT ME" and her parents were like "Now, Toph, thinks Ravenclaw-esque thoughts, everyone knows nothing bad ever happens to Ravenclaws! And you're too precious for anything bad to happen". (They used to think Hufflepuff, but then Azula's friends got in there, and it was not longer a "safe" house for their precious widdle baby). Toph freaks out, but soon is totally fine with it, and maybe even joins the quidditch team? Not really sure how, but she does it! And she's a beater. :D
Thank you! I wish I could say that I made them, but I didn't, I got them from here~ ♥
