I can't see the stars anymore living here
Let's go to the hills where the outlines are clear
Wally West froze at the news.
His aunt was sitting there, looking completely calm, while Uncle Barry sat next to her, holding her hands. The only outward indication of the bombshell they had just dropped was the all-over trembling by Uncle Barry.
“20 percent…?” Wally choked out. “Only 20…?”
“It’s stage IV Wally. It’s not the end of the world.” Aunt Iris said, but she was lyinglyinglying and Wally did what he did best. He ran. Out of the room, down the hallways, out the door, away. He didn’t even know where he was going, but he knew he had to run and keep running because if he stopped, he wouldn’t be able to start again.
I fell through the cracks at the end of our street
Let's go to the beach,
get the sand through our feet
He stopped.
Eventually.
He wasn’t quite sure where he was, not quite sure if he cared.
The stars were out, by then.
Wally was in the middle of a desert (he didn’t know where, though) and the stars- oh lord the stars! For half a moment he considered wishing on them (but that wasn’t how science worked).
But science was what was telling him that his aunt (who loved him like a son and who had married- been willing to marry his uncle and who made those cookies he loved and knew what it was like to be a teenager and a speedster) had an 80% chance of dying.
Wally West stared at the night sky, and decided to ask.
“Please… Just, please don’t let the cancer kill her… Please!” He said to the empty void. Then he broke down, and started to cry.
Bring on the wonder
Bring on the song
I pushed you down deep in my soul for too long
Bring on the wonder
We got it all wrong
We pushed you down deep in our souls for too long

In the silence of the darkness
I can’t pretend I’m wide awake
Afraid I could go under
M’Gann is not used to the quiet.
Sure there are noises, the sounds of the machines that keep Mt. Justice habitable, the drip of the faucet when someone (usually Superboy- he’s too afraid to shut it off, he’s afraid that he’ll break the faucet Superman wouldn’t to screw it in all the way) , the sound of the mountain shifting and creaking (or is that just in her mind?) but it’s still too quiet.
At home, she has the minds of her sisters flickering against her consciousness, no prying, but they’re there, and she can call on them easily. Here, though, it’s against the rules (except during missions, apparently it’s okay then), but when it’s not a mission, it’s too…
…Too lonely.
She feels trapped in her head, trapped in her own body and unable to call on anyone. She can’t talk to J’onn, he’s busy doing league things, she can’t take to Red Tornado- it doesn’t work with him, and Superboy has made his opinion very clear.
She’s alone.
On the top of Mt. Justice, the stars are clear. She heard about making a wish on stars (from Kid Flash, trying to impress her. She knows he doesn’t believe in magic though). They have something similar at… At home.
“Please” she says to the night sky “please, I don’t want to be lonely.”
Nothing happens (of course nothing happens, Hello Megan! What were you thinking?) but she makes one of plea to the skies.
“Please.”
In the silence of the darkness
I stumble for the light of day
But the journey never ends
3.
Heart don’t fail me now
Courage don’t desert me
Don’t turn back now that we’re here
People always say
Life is full of choices
No one ever mentions fear
There’s nothing that he wants more, everyone knows that.
Hell, he wouldn’t be surprised if everyone in the league knew that.
He was built as Superman’s clone (Superman’s son), why wouldn’t he want Superman is a father figure.
At the least he could teach Superboy how to use his powers. Pale imitations of his own, but still there.
But… Well…
It wouldn’t hurt to be loved. To have a place to call home.
Dammit.
He could try being nicer to Megan- he’s noticed that she’s lonely (just like him), but her “lonely” and his aren’t the same. After all, she has her Uncle.
And him? He has nobody.
In fact, it’s even worse because before she was still there in Mt. Justice, but now she’s taken to vanishing whenever possible (
She’s on top of the mountain (he wonders why she didn’t invite him to go with her like she did in the beginning), and he can hear her making a wish to the sky.
Well, it wouldn’t hurt for him to give it a try, right?
He closes his eyes. It’s stupid, he feels stupid, but…
Somewhere down this road
I know someone’s waiting
Years of dreams just can’t be wrong
Arms will open wide
I’ll be safe and wanted
Finally home where I belong

In my darkest hours
I could not forsee
That the tide could turn
So fast to this degree
“You cannot win all of your battles” is the first thing his king teaches him. “You can fight, but eventually you will meet an enemy stronger than you.”
“What do I do then?” Kaldur asked once, so young, so naïve.
“You make a tactical retreat. You regroup. You call for back up. You do not fight until death. If you can stay alive, you can warn other people of the attack, you can fight another day.”
And that is that.
Years later Kaldur is the leader of his own group. His own team, and he understands his King. He is watching over his team, and he is worried. Glancing up to the sky quickly he makes the wish he always carries in his heart.
Please, let them all live.
And into the fray.
anctus Espiritus, redeem us from out solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus, insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus, is this what we deserve, can we break free
From chains of never ending agony

So the jewel of jeopardy
Shines with each dangerous step
So unsure of what we've become
What we have and what we have left
The arrow she shoots gets a bullseye. Is it any surprise? No. After all, she is Artemis, this is what she trains for, and this is what she does.
Of course, if
She tries not to let it out how much it hurts to be compared to him. To be compared, and discarded because she just doesn’t measure up.
It doesn’t even matter how good she is, how precise she is, because she will not be him, and that’s reason enough to hate her.
Except, well, they all can’t hate her, right? Just Kid Flash, but he’s so vocal about it that it’s hard to escape.
She doesn’t even really care if they still hate her (okay, maybe she does a little) or if they never accept her (lieslieslies), but if they would just shut up about it.
Outside walking home she looks up at the sky. It’s a city sky, light pollution hiding most of the stars but she still can see them.
It’s probably too much to ask that the original members like her, but surely a wish that they’ll tolerate her can’t hurt, right?
And the rains came down
And the stars fell from the skies
Oh, how dark the night
It always seems those castles and dreams
Fade with the morning light

Perish thoughts like contraband
I train myself in martial arts
As advertised
I reinforce my softened parts

Robin doesn’t wish upon stars.
Oh sure, maybe he did once upon a time when he was younger, but now he sees no point to it. After all, the wishes he made while young were from two extremes- the horrendously silly (please let there be éclairs tonight!) to the horribly serious (please let them come back- I promise I’ll be good—!).
So yeah, Robin doesn’t wish on stars anymore.
Why should he need to? He has his family.
That’s it.
That’s the end of it.
And maybe they’re little, and a bit broken but they’re still good. (Robin is going to kill KF for dragging him to go see that movie. At the theatre. In Hawai’i).
Robin wouldn’t die for his family (you don’t die, you have a back-up plan instead), but he thinks to himself I think I’d kill for them.
And he would.
After all, Kid Flash and Speedy and Superboy and Kaldur and M’Gann and, hell, even Artemis, they’re family.
That’s all there is to it.
Daydreaming, admiring, being
Quietly, open the world
I hear the time of the starry sky
Turning over at midnight
Seen through me little glazed lane
A world in myself
Daydreaming, admiring, being
Quietly, open the world
I hear the time of the starry sky
Turning over at midnight
(it's a .rar file)
Track 1-7
Tracks 1-7 are the tracks actually used in the drabble. All of them were picked because of something in the lyrics, rather than the music of the song itself. The rest of the tracks were picked just because of how I see them fitting the tone of the story.
As always, YMMV.
(^_^)
Track 1.
Airplanes—B.o.B. ft. Hayley Williams
This is the song that the OP had in their description of the story. I hadn’t ever heard it before, but I listened to it, and I liked it, so I decied to put it in as song #1
Track 2.
Bring on the Wonder—Susan Enan ft. Sarah McLachlan
My family has a history of cancer, so writing this was a release for me. I knew that I wanted KF to have a moment where science was giving him a bad answer, an answer he just couldn’t accept. I first heard this song in an episode of Bones, and it’s been with me ever sinse, so I knew it was the song I was going to use for KF.
Track 3.
Silence of the Darkness—Kamelot
All I can say for this song is that the lyrics reminded me of Megan, and what she must have been going through after she learned she shouldn’t be using her telepathy around her human friends like she would at home.
Track 4.
Journey to the Past—Liz Callaway
Yeah… No excuses for this one…
Um… I thought the lyrics were good, and I like the song?
Track 5.
Our Solemn Hour—Within Temptation
The background of this song is Winston Churchill giving speeches during World War II. It’s a crises song for me, a song about leading during that crises. Kaldur is the leader, and that means he has to make all the tough choices, and be the one who worries for everyone.
I’m not saying that he’s the only one worried, though.
Track 6.
Castles and Dreams—Blackmore’s Night
Joining Young Justice would be great, right? You get to make new friends, fight crime together, be badass, and ogle that cute guy who’s supposedly Superman’s clone.
Yeah… It’s not like that at all.
Have fun!
Track 7.
Group Four—Massive Attack
This one’s a little weird, I suppose. I like the song because it reminds me of the darkness in Gotham where Robin grows up, but at the same time the lyrics are almost… Hopeful at times.
Just lik Robin.
After this songs, the fanmix goes into other songs that I listened to or was reminded off while I was writing the fic. Some of them may not seem to actually be connected…
…Um…
…It made sense in my head? (^_^)’
Track 8.
O Death—Rani Arbo
This song’s for Aunt Iris. Sort of. It’s about Death going to many people to take them, and them asking not to go. The main one is a sinner, but that in no way reflects my perception of Aunt Iris.
I just like the song, and I think it’s an interesting way at looking at death and dying.
Track 9.
Aria—Delerium ft. Mediaeval Baebes
Again, this is Aunt Iris—but not her illness. This is Aunt Iris in all her glory, happy and joyful, and refusing to let the cancer win.
Track 10.
You’re Not Alone—Kate Covington
So, Kate Convington didn’t actually write the song, but she’s the one who wrote the fan-lyrics, sung it, and arranged it the way she did, hence she’s listed as the artist. A song for the whole team, because no matter how much they feel alone, they are not, and they never will be.
Track 11.
Requiem—Joe Hiashi
I have no explanation for this song.
Other than it reminds me of Robin.
Yeah, I have no idea.
I heard it while writing the fic, though, and it was like “ooh, this is Robin!”
Track 12.
When You Wish Upon A Star—Leigh Harline and N. Washington
This is not the original Disney version, I’m sorry. But…
Well…
I alsmot like this version better. I’m not normally a country/bluegrass fan, but this song makes me happy.
It’s inclusion is simply due to the whole “wishing upon a star” aspect. J
Track 13.
Don’t You Cry—Kamelot
This song is not about shaming anyone who cries, instead it’s about how someone shouldn’t cry over the other for he does not want her to cry over him and suffer. There’s always a price to pay with being a superhero, and if you cry everytime someone gets hurt…
Plus it’s totally another song for Aunt Iris
Track 14.
I Fought In A War—Belle and Sebastian
Young Justice is lucky, they get to fight in the war with their friends, instead of leaving their friends behind.
But, in the end, it’s still a war, and YJ is still kids. They can wish on stars all they want, but they’re not getting their innocence back.
Track 15.
Where Are We Going From Here—Blackmore’s Night
I have no reasons for this one, except I heard it while I was working on the fanmix, and it hit me that this is what it would be like after a bad mission. So, yeah, free super-special bonus song anyone?
Track 16.
64 aka Go—Lemon Jelly
Another one that just randomly reminds me of Robin, and the lengths (I think) he’d be willing to go for his friends.
Track 17.
Firefly—Owl City
This is my wishing song. Not intentionally, but now I can’t here this song without thinking of being outside in the summer, watching the fireflies, and making a wish to the stars.
Yeah.
This my first fanmix, so I hope you enjoy it!
